About
Jess’ interdisciplinary work bridges geophysical and social sciences to mitigate the impact of volcanic hazards on populations. Part of her PhD research explores holistic uses of “noise” from satellite system data to track volcanic tsunamis and detect ash plumes. She also uses qualitative social science methods to conduct community-engaged research aimed at better understanding evacuation decision-making among parents in Mount Rainier’s lahar hazard zones. Jess received her Bachelors in Geology from the University of Colorado Boulder in 2021 and intends to complete her PhD in 2026. Her research supports volcanic hazard preparedness and will hopefully contribute to the prevention of future volcanic disasters.
